We performed a window glass replacement for a double pane window in Hackensack, NJ. This window is particularly unique because it has a low emissary coat (low-e) coating. Low-E coating is often found in newer windows, or windows that have recently been upgraded. Low-E window panes improve your window’s thermal emissivity by reflecting heat-causing ultra violet rays. Regular window panes absorb the ultra violet rays and pass them through the thermal barrier of your single and double pane windows. In short, having low-e coating on your window panes improves saves you money overtime by lowering your utility bills.

Low-E Coat On an Insulated Glass Window

To improve energy efficiency, a thin coat is applied to a specific surface on your insulated glass. This process is done at the glass manufacturing plant. All low-e coatings must be on the inside (middle portion) of the double pane window. This protects the low-e from being damaged. Having low-e on different surfaces also yield different effects. For example, a low-e glass coating on the inside of the window pane facing outside (surface #1) will reflect radiant infrared energy from the sun thus not allowing heat to pass through the window. This is a great solution for a home in a hot area. Having low-e on facing inside the home will retain the home’s heat during the winter.

When thinking of windows, size, tint and other aesthetic qualities come to mind, but low-e coatings play an important role in the overall performance of a window and can significantly affect the overall heating, lighting, and cooling costs of a building.

  It does indeed! It is more effective than using argon gas in between the panes.
