We can not emphasize the importance of safety film on mirrors.

Not only it is the law in certain circumstances, i.e. gyms, public restrooms, or retail. The safety of ones children in ones own home should be highly considered.

Mirrors once broken can become shards of glass that can not just be dangerous but also lethal.

Generally mirrors are a piece of annealed glass, it is none-safety glass like laminated or tempered. When it breaks, it breaks in large pieces, take these pieces and elevate them of the floor and suddenly these broken pieces come undone and become falling guillotines, it is unlikely a lay person would understand the weight of a 1/4″ thick square foot of glass, this one sq. foot weight is in excess of 3 lbs. Ok you say I only have 1/8″ thick mirror, here is the conundrum, thicker glass heavier but not as sharp as thinner glass. In essence both are equally dangerous, through personal experience we tend to have more injuries due to thinner glass then thicker glass. The thinner the glass the sharper it is and cause deeper cuts that are like a surgeons knife.

SO what does safety film do.

Safety film is a strong plastic that has a mesh-mash of plastic threads embedded in the film, the film has a very strong adhesive to it. The film is added to the back of the mirror, when; not if the mirror breaks, the film holds the broken piece of mirror in place and does not let it fall from say 10 ft high, without safety film; when it does fall, it will fall in its most aerodynamic form, which is its sharp end.

Better to be safe then sorry and spend the few extra dollars. An ounce of prevention is worth every penny.
